Rita Wilson, star of the Good Wife, made her debut on the red carpet at this week's Tony Awards, her first public appearance since the actress underwent surgery for breast cancer treatment last April. Rita announced she has a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery after her diagnosis.According to Us Weekly, Wilson shared her story publicly as a warning to fans. Although she initially wasn't diagnosed with the malignant tumor, she sought a second opinion after not feeling well for a while. After her diagnosis, Rita shared a statement with fans.
"Last week, with my husband by my side, and with the love and support of family and friends, I underwent a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction for breast cancer after a diagnosis of invasive lobular carcinoma. I am recovering and most importantly, expected to make a full recovery. Why? Because I caught this early, have excellent doctors and because I got a second opinion. At the award ceremony, Rita Wilson was stunning as she took to the carpet in a long glittery black Tom Ford gown, with a halter clasp at her neck and cutouts at the collarbone. Since Rita's husband, Tom Hanks, couldn't be at the ceremony, she arrived on the ceremony's carpet with her step-son, Colin Hanks.
I feel blessed to have a loving, supportive husband, family, friends, and doctors and that I am the beneficiary of advances in the field of breast cancer and reconstruction. I am getting better every day and look forward to renewed health. I hope this will encourage others to get a second opinion and to trust their instincts if something doesn't 'feel' right."
"I feel great," Rita told E! News on the red carpet. "When you do Broadway, you have a family there and one at home as well. I had so much love through the process. I'm very thankful."
The actress not only appears on television, but has been starring in Fish in the Dark, a Broadway play. Wilson took some time off from that role to battle cancer, but now resumed that role in May, after feeling like she "won" her battle. She announced her return on David Letterman, as reported by the Inquisitr. Tom Hanks was reportedly in such a good mood over the news that he taught David Letterman how to use a selfie stick.Rita Wilson also tweeted from the red carpet, sharing the fun with Colin, "@ColinHanks, my son, and I @TheTonyAwards.
