Monaco’s Princess Charlotte Casiraghi Splits From Her Son’s Dad

Monaco’s Princess Charlotte Casiraghi has decided to “call it splits,” so to speak, on her relationship with her boyfriend of three years and the father of her son, French actor Gad Elmaleh, People is reporting.

Charlotte, who is eighth in line to Monaco’s throne, didn’t publicly confirm the split or give any reasons for the split, but sources close to the couple confirm that the heiress was frustrated at the demands of the couple’s diverging careers.

“It’s sad. Mostly, this is a couple that drifted apart over their careers. He wasn’t around enough – and she wanted a father for her son.”

The Moroccan-born French actor has been working on his career, splitting his time between the U.S. and France, keeping him away from Charlotte and their 17-month-old son, Raphael, for weeks at a time, according to the Daily Mail.

Charlotte, meanwhile, has been focusing on her career in horse jumping. Ironically, in the midst of her split with Gad, she suffered a nasty fall at the Longines Athina Horse Show. Fortunately, she wasn’t injured.

Though breathlessly reported on by the French tabloids, the couple — who met in 2011 — didn’t give them much. They intensely private Charlotte and Gad rarely spoke to the media about their relationship. Gad, however, opened up just a bit about his relationship with Charlotte in a 2013 interview in People.

“We share the same observations about life. When we are somewhere, she says, ‘Did you look at that? Did you observe that? What did you think about that?’ And then we have a good exchange… She’s one of those people who always tells the truth. You can talk about philosophy and make stupid jokes with her. We go see art or she will go crazy over a TV show and laugh out loud with me about a stupid gag. So this is important for me to mix all that and we have real conversations and share things. I’m the happiest man – really, I am. I am lucky to be with her.”

For weeks, rumors have been circulating that a split was coming. Last week, Charlotte was in Paris but checked into a hotel instead of returning to her apartment. Meanwhile, men were seen removing Gad’s belongings from the couple’s home.
