The first season of Outlander is over. It has been a huge success for Starz. It has especially boosted the number of women that are tuning into to the network that in the past has been predominantly dominated by male viewers. Outlander has helped vault Starz to the number 2 premium network behind HBO which has Game of Thrones. CEO of Starz Chris Albrecht commented to Adweek what a great book series can do for networks.
If you can get in business on a great book series where you've got a presold audience, and there are storylines that have been worked out by an author that have had the test not just of time but of an audience having to read and accept it, then that's a pretty good template for a television series. This can be a double-edged sword for a network or a motion picture company for that matter. One important area a company must get right is the casting of these characters that fans have a vested interest in. For instance, a lot of the negativity of Fifty Shades of Grey came from the fact that the lead characters played by Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson didn't seem to have a lot of chemistry. The wrong cast can kill a series.
This brings us to Outlander Season Two. It has already been reported that Ron Moore has yet to fill the role for Brianna. This is a role that Moore will need to get right if he is to please the fans of the Outlander series. Brianna is the daughter of Claire and Jamie who is raised by Claire and her present time husband Frank. This actress needs certain attributes for fans to accept. Here are three ladies that could fit the role nicely.
The most obvious choice for the role of Brianna for most fans is Karen Gillan. Gillan was born in Inverness, Scotland. If you know anything at all about this series, you cannot get more authentic than that. She is 5'10" tall, which fits Brianna. She was Doctor Who's Companion. Again, if you know anything at all about this show, this is just another feather in Gillan's cap to play Brianna. However, her being such the obvious choice may not make her the choice at all.
Gillan is becoming more in demand. She is most likely going to reprise her role as Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Reports are that could begin filming early next year. This could keep her from being able to fit a series like Outlander into her schedule. She has also been cast in rival HBO's series surrounding the Salem With Trials titled The Devil You Know.
The next name that has been thrown around by some fans to play Brianna is Rose Leslie. Leslie also fits the bill of a native of Scotland. She was born in Aberdeen. She played Gwen Dawson in Downton Abbey which makes fans certainly familiar with her. Her most notable role to this point was as Ygritte in Game of Thrones. It helps that most of her jobs are wrapping up so she should be available.
The final actress on this list that could fill the role of Brianna quite nicely is Sophie Turner. Turner is a native of Northampton, England. Her list of credits are not long so they would have the freshness that the executives wouldn't get from the previously mentioned actresses.
Unfortunately, there is the little title of the previously mentioned Game of Thrones. She is currently playing the role of Sansa Stark, one of the only characters not to die so far. She will also be playing the young Jean Grey in X-Men Apocalypse. All of this points to a schedule that she may not be able to fit Brianna into.
Which one of these choices makes sense to you to play Brianna in Outlander? You may have someone that is not listed. We would love to hear that as well.
