Warning: This article contains spoilers for the season premiere of Hannibal.
It has been a long time since fans were able to sink their teeth into new episodes of NBC’s Hannibal, and, for most, there’s still some time to wait. Luckily for Hannibal fans feeling the effects of such a long wait and eager for some morsels on what they can expect when Hannibal premieres, the first three episodes of Hannibal were recently previewed for critics.
Variety recently shared a very generalized synopsis of what fans can expect in Hannibal‘s third season, which has been said to be clinging to the “atmospheric, operatic and opulent” themes that have made such successes out of Hannibal‘s first two seasons.
“Following season two’s finale bloodbath, Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) has escaped America with his former therapist Bedelia Du Maurier (Gillian Anderson), and taken up residence in Europe, where our titular cannibal has wasted no time sampling the local cuisine. Freed from the pretense of his psychiatric practice and cat-and-mouse game with the FBI, season three’s Hannibal is an altogether different beast, unrestrained in his impulses — which is bad news for anyone he invites for dinner.”
In a more detailed look at Hannibal‘s season premiere, which is entitled “Antipasto,” it is learned that nationwide alerts have forced Hannibal out of the United States and sent him traveling abroad. Hasn’t Hannibal Lecter always had a particular passion for Europe though? We do find Hannibal looking somewhat alien in motorcycle gear as opposed to his designer suits, but even Hannibal’s less sophisticated wardrobe can’t keep the cannibal in him from indulging in a champagne-guzzling playboy.
NBC has released an official synopsis for the season premiere of Hannibal to compliment the above teaser.
“HANNIBAL IS ON THE RUN – EDDIE IZZARD AND ZACHARY QUINTO GUEST STAR – Having successfully escaped FBI capture, Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) is moving through the European landscape, with Bedelia Du Maurier (Gillian Anderson) in tow.But Dr. Lecter’s old habits and opulent tastes are still on display as he settles into a new identity and life in Florence, Italy, working at the Palazzo Capponi museum. Glimpses into the past help inform his relationship with Bedelia, a pairing not clearly defined as friend or foe.”
New Hannibal cast additions and changes in current cast members give an even deeper look into what Hannibal may explore in the third season and to judge by this new information, it seems Hannibal may be venturing deeper into the storyline of Thomas Harris’ Red Dragon this season. Glen Fleshler (True Detective) has been added in the role of Cordell, known as the personal physician of Mason Verger (Joe Anderson, who will replace Michael Pitt in that role), while Gillian Anderson has been upgraded to a Hannibal series regular. Also joining Hannibal are Richard Armitage (The Hobbit), Rutina Wesley (True Blood), and Nina Arianda, who will each play Red Dragon characters Francis Dolarhyde, Reba McClane, and Molly. Raul Esparza will again play Dr. Frederick Chilton.
Hannibal premieres Thursday July 4 on NBC.
