The End of ‘The Following’ Isn’t The End of Kevin Bacon

Last week marked the series finale of The Following, a bloody and violent drama/thriller series starring Kevin Bacon. Fox decided to pull the plug on The Following with little notice, leaving viewers in the lurch, wondering what is to become of Agent Ryan Hardy.

The problem with the series finale of The Following is that it isn’t really the series finale; it is the finale of Season 3 of The Following, written and recorded by writers and producers who had every intention of leading viewers into a season four.

The Following met its demise with dwindling ratings in its third season and Fox announced the cancellation of The Following just two weeks before the finale, leaving no time for changes or adjustments.

“There was not time, even if we wanted to. Personally, I feel like the ending is incredibly dynamic in the way it would’ve held us into season 4 if we had one, but I also feel, as a place to leave off, it leaves off with more story left to tell, which I don’t think is a bad thing,” said Alexi Hawley, executive producer of The Following, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

“I would love nothing more for the show to continue in some form”

There has been talk of The Following being shopped by other outlets, with Hulu as the front-runner, but if and when anyone picks up The Following for Season 4 remains to be seen.

Though the future of The Following is up in the air, the future of it’s star, Kevin Bacon isn’t. Bacon has several new projects coming soon to the big screen and television alike.

Cop Car, a film starring Kevin Bacon, is an action-thriller that has received positive critical review since it’s debut at Sundance 2015 in January. Cop Car will release nationwide on August 7.

Bacon will also appear in Black Mass, alongside Johnny Depp and Benedict Cumberbatch. Black Mass is a crime drama based on the book Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob, by Dick Lehr. Black Mass will hit theaters September 18.

And in a role that Kevin Bacon was seemingly born to play, he is the spokesman in an ad campaign for of all things, the American Egg Board. The web film features the slogan “Nobody knows eggs better than Bacon.”

In addition to his upcoming pics and pitches, Kevin Bacon recently made an appearance at the Seattle International Film Festival to receive some recognition for his past work. Bacon received an award for Outstanding Achievement in Acting.

“It’s a little strange because I don’t tend to look back on something. I’m really like focused down the road. But when you’re that sort of person, it’s not the worst thing to acknowledge, if nothing else, you’ve been able to sustain a career,” he said in an interview with King5.
