Patrick Dempsey Finds Racing ‘Stimulating,’ And McDreamy In A Racing Suit Makes Fans Go ‘Weak’

Grey’s Anatomy won’t be bringing back McDreamy, but that doesn’t mean Patrick Dempsey is anywhere near ready to retire from acting. He just needed a change. Dempsey will be acting again, but for now he’ll be focusing on car racing. Of course, his character on Grey’s Anatomy, Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd, was killed in a car accident at the end of Season 12, so fans have to hope Dempsey’s driving is better than Shepherd’s was.

Creator Shonda Rhimes wrote that Dempsey’s character “will always be an incredibly important character” and went on to express what thousands of fans are feeling about losing Patrick Dempsey from Grey’s Anatomy.

“I absolutely never imagined saying goodbye to our ‘Mcdreamy’.”

No one imagined that Grey’s Anatomy could ever be without Patrick. But some people weren’t surprised at the development. Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who played Denny Duquette on the show, said he understood how Dempsey could want to leave.

“I guess it’s run its course for some of those people [who] have been there for 10 years, and at a certain point you don’t want to do that character anymore and it’s time for new challenges,” he told Huffington Post.

For Patrick Dempsey, the move is all about following a dream. Patrick has been crazy about race cars since he was a kid with hot rod toys. Dempsey’s dad was a racing fan, and Patrick as a little boy liked to stretch out on the front seat of the family station wagon and listen to the Indy 500 broadcast. “It started way back then,” explained Dempsey.

Now he’s going to play with the real thing for awhile.

Dempsey already has an “impressive” career in racing, both as a team owner and as a driver. Indianapolis Motor Speedway president J. Douglas Boles knew Patrick was perfect for his latest racing gig. Dempsey waved the green flag to open the 99th Indianapolis 500 on Sunday.

Patrick loves racing, no doubt about it.

“I love the camaraderie and the fellowship. I think the challenge is with oneself and not so much your fellow competitors, necessarily.”

Looks like fans love Patrick when he’s racing as much as they did when he was on Grey’s Anatomy. Twitter user Julie Giraffe says she loves Patrick whether he’s “doctoring or racing!!”

Patrick’s fans will get to see a lot of that trademark sexiness in racing suits. Dempsey is on his way to Le Mans to prepare for the 24-hour endurance race this June 13–14, and planning lots more racing after that.

“I just love it. It’s really stimulating both physically and mentally.”

Yes, it is stimulating, for fans too.
