Rental Beds Are New Airport Trend

If you are a frequent airport traveler, then you are probably familiar with how annoying it is to sleep on the floor of the terminal, or even on the airport benches, while waiting for your flight. Well, soon you can give your back and neck a break, and climb into a real bed, while you wait for your flight.

Airports around the country are in the process of installing what they call “relaxation rooms.” These rooms are small suites that include internet, TV, and a bed. They are already installed in Atlanta and Philadelphia, and will soon be opening in Minneapolis-St. Paul and Dallas-Fort Worth.

Atlanta-based Minute Suites LLC is largely responsible for the growing trend, and their rates, like most things at airports, are steep. You can rent a “relaxation room” for $30 per hour, or $120 per night. Dan Boivin, chairman of the Metropolitan Airports Commission, explained that:

“We have to offer travelers amenities that they can find at a shopping mall, that they can find downtown. We’re just like a little city and we have to have all the amenities that a city does.”

Daniel Solomon, the company’s CEO, said in a statement about the project that there are “no instructions required…they walk in. They plop themselves down.”

Business travel writer Joe Brancatelli wrote that, “This has not been an easy concept to sell to America. Americans are simply not used to it.”

With the cost of a hotel room near an airport at an average of $91 per night, the Minute Suites are a good alternative, and also offer more convenience than having to leave the airport.
