Mama Hippopotamus Corrals Baby During Swim At San Diego Zoo [Video]

A mother hippopotamus and her baby were swimming at the San Diego Zoo when the mama corralled her daughter to shallow water. According to WQAD, Devi the calf is said to be “very curious,” so her mom has been very cautious as a result. As Devi learns to navigate the water, she gets to explore the environment, but her mom is very careful not to let the baby get into any kind of trouble.

According to ABC 7, Devi was born on March 23. She has been getting really good at swimming, and recently popped over near the glass of the 150,000-gallon pool to “greet” visitors. She and her parents (mom is Funani and dad is Otis) can be seen in the pool on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

The hippopotamus is listed as a “vulnerable” species. Many are fascinated by the animals, and really enjoy learning about them, which makes them a popular attraction at many zoos.

As previously reported by the Inquisitr, a wild hippo made headlines last year after scaring off a crocodile, and saving the life of a gnu. You can check out that video here.
