Jaden Smith was first rumored to be playing Static Shock quite a while ago. Now The Walking Dead's Tyler James Williams has basically confirmed that Jaden Smith will indeed be taking on the role in a recent interview. Perhaps this is the reason that Jaden Smith dressed as Batman at his latest prom, because he was trying to hint to people that he was indeed going to be a superhero in one of his next movie roles.
Jaden Smith was confirmed for Static Shock by Williams, so it should be pointed out that it doesn't appear any of the studios have come forward with their own confirmation. Williams was talking to Flicks and the City when the was asked about the rather small amount of black actors getting superhero roles. As Comicbook points out, at this point in the interview people can be heard yelling, to him "Static Shock" and "Spider-Man." Those suggestions elicited an interesting response from Williams.
"I don't know... What you're taking about," Williams said with a smile. "But yeah no, it's great to see Static Shock is happening with Jaden." Of course, there has been some other talk that someone like Williams could take on the role of the new Spider Man, who has been an African American boy in recent comics, taking over the mantle from Peter Parker.
Jaden Smith has not talked about the role himself yet, though after these comments, it seems likely that Smith will be doing that rather soon. Warner Bros. has been working on putting together a film centered on Static Shock with Django Unchained producer Reginald Hudlin. Jaden Smith will likely be named in the next few days or weeks if he is indeed the one who is going to step into that hero's shoes. Of course, it's possible that Williams was doing a bit of an end around and that Jaden Smith isn't actually going to be Static Shock but Williams is. While Williams had been rumored to be stepping into the role of Spider Man at some point, Static Shock is a DC comics hero. The character was actually rather short-lived when it comes to comic books. Still, the movie seems to have enough of a push that it will get made in the coming years and now it looks as though Jaden Smith is going to get his own DC comics hero.
