A New Orleans waiter was fired this weekend after allegedly writing a racial slur on a receipt given to black customers. Reportedly, the waiter purposely left the offensive phrase viewable on the receipt after removing a charge for an ordered food item.
New York Daily News reports that on Thursday, 23-year-old Dakota Crochet was working at Huck Finn’s, a sports bar and restaurant located in New Orleans’ French Quarter, when he printed out the receipt with the phrase “N—– 100% dislike” appearing in bold, capital letters.
A former waitress of the restaurant indicated that there is no way that waiters who print the receipts would have not noticed something so obvious.
“I printed those receipts 50 times a day. I know for a fact he knew it would show up on his receipt. I was like, are you that hateful that you would put that on the receipt?”
Liryca Neville Branch, daughter of famous New Orleans musician Cyril Neville, was one of the three patrons who received the receipt. She’s now contemplating filing a lawsuit against the establishment.
“I’ve never had anything like this happen before to me. Trust me — this is not over. I refuse to let this die out.”
Meanwhile, some people were surprised at Dakota’s behavior, whose father is the general manager of Huck Finn’s. Another former waitress, who is black herself, stated that she would have never thought that Dakota would do something so blatantly racist, but his name was at the top of the receipt, indicating that he printed it out.
“When I saw it, I wanted to know who the hell printed it. When I saw it was Dakota, I was like you have to be f—- kidding me. I never got that from him.”
Shortly after the incident, Liryca’s mother, Gaynielle H. Neville, posted a copy of the receipt on Facebook, which sparked outrage as numerous people demanded that Dakota be terminated. As the story quickly went viral, Huck Finn’s management team did indeed fire Dakota, and issued an apology on behalf of the establishment.
“The unfortunate actions of this one employee do not mirror the mission of Huck Finn’s Cafe’s firm non-discrimination policy, and we are extremely apologetic for any inconvenience this may have caused.”
Gaynielle Neville, however, wasn’t quick to forgive the restaurant after learning that many others have had the same racist treatment.
Many have wondered why the racist slur exists at all, and why it’s being printed on receipts. According to an undisclosed source, the phrase was created after numerous people allegedly demanded free items after claiming their food was undercooked or not prepared the way they asked. The source states that the racist phrase was a way for waiters to “joke away” promo items on a receipt.
Regardless of the reason, Gaynielle Neville, along with her family, is determined to bring awareness to the incident that, according to former employees, is not surprising given the establishment’s past discriminatory practices.
“Racism is a disease. It will never be forgotten. We will not tolerate anybody thinking they can tell us something and get away with it.”
This isn’t the first time a waiter was fired for using inappropriate slurs on a restaurant receipt. Earlier this year, a Texas waiter lost his job after typing a racist word on a receipt given to black customers.
So far, Dakota nor his father have returned calls or commented on the issue.
