Golden State won Game 2, 99-98. But Houston had a golden opportunity to steal the game in the final seconds when top scorer James Harden made a massive and inexplicable blunder that ended up allowing time on the clock to run out before he could even attempt a potentially game-winning shot.

Taking the ball up the court with seven seconds left to play in the game, when he got the ball across half court the normally aggressive Harden for some reason passed the ball backward to center Dwight Howard.

Howard sent the ball quickly back to Harden, but by that point the clock had ticked down to just two seconds — and somewhere between receiving the pass from Howard and getting his first dribble down, Harden let the ball slip out of his hands.

As he scrambled to recover the loose ball, time ran out and Golden State escaped with a sweep of its two home games opening the series.

Harden was clearly disgusted with himself after the game concluded.

The game-deciding miscue overshadowed an otherwise commanding performance from Harden, who came one assist short of a triple-double. He recorded nine, to go with 10 rebounds and most importantly, 38 points.

“It’s frustrating to give the game away like that for myself,” Harden said after the game. “But my teammates and coaches were behind me. Just saying that, we’re going home to secure home now, go out there Game Three.”
