Kendall Jenner Challenges ‘Flatgate’ Controversy: Wears Flat Shoes To The Cannes Film Festival

Kendall Jenner is breaking all the fashion rules at the Cannes Film Festival. Not only did she wear a crop top evening gown, but she also wore flats to the event. What #Flatgate controversy?

On Thursday evening, the daily E! News show reported that Kendall Jenner “broke all the rules” on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet. The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star was seen wearing flat shoes at one of the events at the popular film festival.

Jenner, 19, owned the Fendi brunch at the Cannes Film Festival by wearing a mint-green dress designed by Fendi by Karl Lagerfeld. She accessorized her look with cat-eye sunglasses, a tassel cross body handbag, and silver cap-toe loafers. Is Jenner making a statement about the #Flatgate controversy?

What controversy you ask?

Both the internet and the social media have been in an uproar about stories of women who have been turned away from the festival for wearing flat shoes. Film producer Valerie Richter, whose left foot is partially amputated, requiring her to wear flats, was turned away as well. Still, the Cannes Film Festival says that flats are not appropriate for their strict and formal dress code. That’s what caused the hashtag #Flatgate to trend on social media.

Actress Emily Blunt even expressed her distaste over this controversy, as previously reported via the Inquisitr.

“That’s very disappointing. To think there are these waves of equality and waves of people discovering that women are so fascinating and interesting to watch and bankable (on screen).”

Blunt, who wore heels to the premier of her new film Sicario, says that women should do away with heels.

“Everyone should wear flats, to be honest. We shouldn’t be wearing high heels anyway… I just prefer wearing Converse sneakers.”

Talk about sexist as well. Women aren’t allowed to wear flats, but men could probably get away with flat dress shoes and Chuck Taylors at the Cannes Film Festival. There doesn’t appear to be any requirements as to what shoes men must wear on the red carpet.

The flatgate controversy has also led to a petition that asks the film festival to change the dress code for women. The petition on Care2 already has more than 2,700 signatures. They’re asking organizers to “make a statement that flat shoes can be worn by anyone on the red carpet.”

But back to Kendall Jenner. The model also turned heads when she wore a black Azzedine Alaia crop top and evening gown at the premiere of Youth on May 20. She kept it dressy, yet casual with her edgy ensemble. Kendall almost suffered a wardrobe malfunction when her skirt’s sheer paneling flashed her bottom to the cameras. It looks like Kendall also managed to show off her matching black granny panties.

She accessorized her glamorous look with a Chopard diamond choker, a cuff bracelet, and diamond stud earrings. Jenner also wore high heels this time around to the Cannes Film Festival.
