When it comes to chasing down celebrities for their autographs and perhaps a quick selfie with them, 40-year-old Jason Thanos from Chester in the UK is a die-hard, self-proclaimed celebrity hunter who spends over $50,000 per year on his obsession.
Being that $50,000 a year translates to around $4,000 per month, Thanos is not short of a “bob or two,” as they say on the other side of the pond.
So dedicated is Thanos to meeting celebs that he is obsessed with the hobby, and will stop at nothing to build up his already massive autograph collection.
Obsessed may even be an understatement, being that Thanos even named his daughter Angelina after Hollywood star Angelina Jolie.
As he explained to reporters in Britain, “Angelina Jolie was absolutely lovely, she’s so kind. When my wife and I had our daughter in 2008, we named her Angelina as tribute to her. It felt like the right thing to do.”
Despite the great expense, Thanos said he actually sells the autographs he collects for many thousands of dollars. He has received autographs from stars like Muhammad Ali, Sylvester Stallone, Megan Fox and Daniel Radcliffe.
Thanos shared, “I regularly travel to the US, Canada, France, Italy and Ireland for film festivals as well as going to all of the big film premieres in London. I snap pictures of me with the celebrities to authenticate the pictures so I’ve got selfies with huge names including Angelina, Al Pacino and Brad Pitt.“
Amazingly, Thanos sells the autographs he collects for up to $40,000 a piece in some cases.
As he explained, “When you think about my travel expenses and the amount of time I spent stood waiting, as well as five star hotels in order to meet celebrities and the drinks I need to pay in their bars, it all adds up. I’m doing a service to those who can’t meet them. There are lots of people in wheelchairs who can’t do all this travelling to meet their heroes. I create the circle of life, giving them a chance to do that in a way.”
So high are Thanos’ aspirations that he is planning to open a store in Central City in Chester which will sell collectables as well as celebrity autographs.
