According to Dutch gaming website PSFocus, Human Head Studios’ Prey 2 has been cancelled, and an official announcement from Bethesda about the cancellation is expected to come next week.
The site didn’t go into much detail beyond that, aside from noting that the info comes from a “reliable source”, so this news should be taken as a rumor. That being said, Prey 2‘s rocky history certainly makes the rumor believable.
Prey 2 was officially announced back in March 2011, with a release expected on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 at some point this year. Aside from bits and pieces of new information dropped in the couple of months after its announcement, Bethesda went silent, and we’ve heard nothing new since. Considering that Prey 2 is supposed to come out this year, that doesn’t exactly sound hopeful.
As IGN points out in their report, there’s also the matter of the Prey 2 GDC talks. Just last month, Human Head’s Brian Karis revealed that all Prey 2 talks at the annual event had been canceled by ZeniMax right before they were scheduled to take place. This isn’t unheard of, granted, but it does raise some suspicion when you take into account Bethesda’s silence.
Several sites reached out to Bethesda for comment on the rumored cancellation, and all received a “no comment” response, so don’t expect to hear anything more until next week at the earliest.
