The Rockets and Warriors faced off four times in the regular season, and Golden State won all four contests. At the same time, Houston is coming off a dramatic comeback win in the Conference Semifinal series, becoming the first NBA team since 2006 to come back from a 3-1 disadvantage in a seven-game playoff series.
The Rockets also have center Dwight Howard suddenly hitting his peak performance this season — at exactly the right time as far as Houston is concerned. In the postseason, Howard had scored 17 points per game, compared to just under 16 in the regular season.
But more importantly for the 6’11”, 265-pounder known as “Superman,” Howard is pulling down 14 rebounds per game in the playoffs compared to 10.5 in the season — and blocking shots at almost twice the rate as during his season with 2.5 per game compared to 1.3.
Of course, Howard missed half of Houston’s games due to injuries in the 2014-2015 campaign, but now appears to have regained full health with his team just eight wins away from its third NBA Championship since joining the league as the San Diego Rockets in 1967.
Houston won back-to-back titles in 1994 and 1995 but has not even played in an NBA Finals since then.
The Rockets had appeared in the NBA Finals only twice previously; in 1981 and 1986. Both times they lost to the Boston Celtics who featured star power forward Kevin McHale — now the Houston coach.
While the Warriors would appear to be heavy favorites, they also stumbled slightly in their Conference Semifinal series, falling behind 2-1 to the Memphis Grizzlies before regrouping to win three straight games and the series.
The series looks to be an exciting, free-flowing affair, with Golden State Coach Steve Kerr expected to emphasize his team’s usual fast-paced offensive scheme rather than focus on trying to jam up Howard in the paint as the Rockets first two playoff opponents attempted without much success.
Both the Rockets and Warriors are prolific three-point shooting teams, so the battle from outside the arc will likely be a primary factor in determining which team makes it to the NBA Finals.
