‘Game Of Thrones’ Fans Outraged Over Controversial Scene And Threaten To Stop Watching

Game of Thrones fans are outraged over the treatment of Sansa Stark. It makes a difference, considering so many people had found her character boring and monotonous throughout her torture from Joffrey Baratheon. However, it seems that the outrage over the controversial scene is more at the attempt to give Reek (Theon Greyjoy) a reason to redeem himself more than at the fact that Ramsey Bolton raped his virginal wife on their wedding night.

Huffington Post reminded readers that the rape scene does not happen in the books. Game of Thrones has taken a major deviation in the series for Sansa’s character. In the books, her childhood friend Jeyne Poole pretends to be Arya Stark and faces horrifying torture at the hands of Ramsey. Sansa, meanwhile, remains in The Vale. The writers have made the decision to remove fake Arya from the show and give Sansa the horrible treatment, which was not as bad as fake Arya receives in the books. However, fans have still threatened to stop watching Game of Thrones because of this.

One Twitter user made a point about the big change, saying that it was all done for the shock factor. That is unlikely, and more just to keep the number of characters to a minimum. The books are extremely complicated and long, making it difficult to tell the story on the screen. This is not the first time Game of Thrones has changed the storyline for characters.

Vulture does a good job of pointing out that the scene was in the book in some way, but the differences may be the reason for the hatred from book fans. It was a minor character in the book, while Sansa is a major character that fans have come to love, especially this season. She has grown to be a woman, who is ready to seek her revenge. Hopefully, her wedding night will not stop her from seeking that revenge.

This is not the first time Game of Thrones has had controversial scenes. One of those was in season four and also involved rape. Fans were outraged as Jaime Lannister forced himself on sister Cersei at the base of the altar their dead son was lying on. There were questions over whether it was really rape, as the showrunners said Cersei was not saying a definite “no” but a “not right now.” It appeased some but not all fans.

The problem for many is there is not a question of whether Sansa was raped or not, and many fans fear what she will go through in the future. Game of Thrones fans are weary and some do not want to watch it anymore if there is no happy ending for the main protagonists.
