West Virginia House Fire Kills 6 Kids, 2 Adults

CBS News is reporting that two adults and six children were killed in Charleston West Virginia on Saturday when a fire erupted inside a two-story home with no smoke detectors. CBS added that a seventh child is in a local hospital on life support and not expected to survive.

Charleston Mayor Danny Jones, who said the two-story wood frame home did not have a working smoke detector, called the horrible incident the “worst house fire in 40 years.”

“I was with my children and I just grabbed them and hugged them, because I have a 5-year-old and a 4-year-old,” he told WXOW news. “I walked up there and caught a glimpse of some fatalities and it’s something that’s hard to grasp. The fact that there are (six) dead children, it’s unimaginable.”

Jones told The Associated Press one smoke detector was found in a cabinet, but it was not functional.

According to Charleston police, all the victims of the fire were related, and firefighters said it appeared there had been a slumber party at the house.

The house fire was reported at about 3:30 Saturday morning, and the cause of the blaze was still unknown at the time of this writing.
