Just when some fans may have forgotten why Mariah Carey earned the title “diva,” the songstress reminds them.
TMZ reports that Mariah Carey skipped out on the final dress rehearsals for tonight’s Billboard Music Awards. Sources who know Carey told TMZ that stars routinely skip dress rehearsals and Carey doesn’t think this time is any different.
“Nobody does dress [rehearsal]. WTF?? No big stars go… ever.”
That may be true, but Carey’s absence had producers scrambling to figure out whether or not Mariah Carey will perform as scheduled. The difference may be how much is riding on Carey’s performance tonight. Last year’s Billboard Music Awards nabbed the highest ratings in 13 years, thanks in no small part to a Miranda Lambert-Carrie Underwood duet and the debut of the Michael Jackson hologram.
No doubt producers are under pressure to match or beat last year’s ratings. A triumphant Mariah Carey comeback might help, but the stage is set for anything but that.
As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Carey’s latest release, “Infinity,” debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 82 before falling off of the chart entirely the following week. At the same time, Carey cancelled the Wednesday, May 13, performance of her one-week-old Caesar’s Palace residency with nearly no notice to fans.
Carey performed her Saturday, May 16, concert without incident, but fans reportedly flooded the Caesar’s Palace box office with concerns that the concert would be cancelled.
While Mariah Carey and her representatives blamed a bout of bronchitis for the sudden cancellation, the New York Daily News had other ideas. Reportedly, a source told the New York Daily News that Carey cancelled the Caesar’s Palace concert because she was completely unprepared.
“Mariah simply didn’t rehearse enough before starting this many concerts and now she’s feeling it. Leading up to the first show, everyone involved was wondering why this wasn’t rehearsed to death.”
The source also suggested that the problem isn’t whether or not Carey can sing, it’s the quality of everything else about her performance. The cancellation and rumors of sub par show quality may have made the Billboard Music Awards producers more nervous than usual about Carey’s performance and contributed to the panic spurred by the missed rehearsal.
Missed rehearsals aside, at least Mariah Carey seems sure that she will attend tonight’s performance.
