New York Judge Throws Out Unhappy Law School Grad Lawsuit

Yesterday, a judge dismissed a lawsuit brought forth by unhappy law school graduates, looking to cash in on their job prospects since graduation. Or rather, lack thereof.

Judge Melvin L. Schweitzer tossed out the suit yesterday, which was brought forth by nine New York Law School graduates. The recent grads are simply unhappy with their job prospects in already tough times and a market flooded with recent law grads like themselves.

“Law graduates today and over these past few years have been faced with the effect of the most severe contraction in demand for legal services that this court can recall since the early 1970s,” Justice Schweitzer wrote. “Now it is recent law graduates who are caught in the midst of an unanticipated squeeze.”

Schweitzer opined that “not every ailment afflicting society may be redressed by a lawsuit.”The New York Supreme Court judge was sympathetic to the concerns of the alums, but said that regardless, the case was basically an example of caveat emptor, or “let the buyer beware,” in layman’s terms. The decision could end up being bad news for similar cases being brought up across the nation.

Additionally, Schweitzer added that college grads who may be considering law school should be “sophisticated” enough to draw out the pros and cons and look at all the data before making such an expensive decision. While the complainants are likely not pleased with the outcome, Schweitzer says tough luck anyhow:

“It is also difficult for the court to conceive that somehow lost on these plaintiffs is the fact that goodly number of law school graduates toil — perhaps part-time — in drudgery or have less than hugely successful careers,” he said.

Due to the massive amount of debt accrued by law school attendance and the less-than platinum-minted guarantee of a job after graduation, many college grads are indeed deciding against law school. Last year, the number of LSATs administered was down 16%, the biggest drop in over 10 years.

Do you think they had a case?
