Reactions to Tebow Trade

With Peyton Manning elbowing Tim Tebow out his spot in the Denver Broncos, many fans and sports experts wondered what would become of the now-former Broncos QB. All eyes were on Tebow and what his next move might be, and all appearances considered, Tebow has been pretty quiet on the matter. Reactions to Tebow’s trade to the New York Jets have been mixed, with many wishing Tebow the best while also wishing he was playing for someone else.

Jets legend Joe Namath said “I think it stinks” of the trade, further commenting that Mark Sanchez should be “pissed”. Woody Paige of the Denver Post respects Tebow’s heart, off-field generosity, and so forth, but cites mechanical flaws in Tebow’s playing that may prevent him from becoming an elite passer. “And never again will a young man or quarterback quite like Tim Tebow run or pass this way again.”

Bill Smee of Slate is less enchanted by Tebow-mania, putting it unapologetically: “We don’t want you here,” the Jets fan writes of Tebow. Best case, he doesn’t play and the trade means nothing. Worst case, he becomes the starter and sets “the franchise back five years”, he says. “Hey, as a Jet fan, at least I’m used to that sort of thing.”

Mike Lupica of Daily News felt as though the Tebow trade would incite controversy: “The Jets go out and get themselves a rock-star backup who happens to be one of the most famous athletes on the planet, and tell their fans he’s going to pitch middle relief”, he said.

Tim Tebow himself? Mum’s still the word, though AllFacebook reports “Tim updated his current city to New York, New York; Tim added New York Jets to his work; and Tim likes New York Jets.”

Time will tell. Click the links for the full-range of reactions.
