Pentatonix Gets Aca-Awesome Debut In ‘Pitch Perfect 2’

Acapella group Pentatonix, which has covered songs ranging from Imagine Dragons’ rock hit “Radioactive” to the much-calmer tune “Say Something” by Christina Aguilera, will be making their first-ever appearance on film for Pitch Perfect 2. The second movie centers around the Barden Bellas, an all-female a capella group based out of Barden University, as they duke it out in a national competition against other collegiate a capella teams.

It’s no secret that Pentatonix has been growing in popularity thanks to their YouTube channel and albums on iTunes. The band even had the honor of collaborating with virtuoso violinist Lindsey Stirling for their take on “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons.

Now, Pentatonix will be appearing on film for the first time in Pitch Perfect 2. According to Wikipedia, the group first got their fame in 2011, when they won the NBC show The Sing Off. Their success, largely due to promotion via Youtube and their albums on iTunes, can be measured in the fact that they have over 8 million YouTube subscribers (and several channels) as of the writing of this article. Pentatonix will also be the hosts of this year’s Billboard Music Awards on May 17, as they told followers on Twitter recently.

Of course, Anna Kendrick and fan favorite Rebel Wilson (aka Fat Amy) will be back for Pitch Perfect 2, but a clip from the upcoming movie shows Anna’s character Beca fighting with her fella Bellas and departing the group. It remains to be seen how the Bellas will function without Beca, who gave the group’s public image an overhaul in the first movie (causing friction with the older, more seasoned singers, but eventually leading to them accepting her in that cheesy, chick flick sort of way).

The movie is already doing well with critics. Film critic Guy Lodge of Vanity Fair called Pitch Perfect 2 “….entertaining” and noted that it was arguably better than its predecessor. Lodge went on to tell people that the movie’s script is even lighter on narration than the original Pitch Perfect, so fans of the original movie won’t have to worry about being bogged down with over-explanation.

The storyline of the second movie will involve the Bellas competing in an international contest which has never been won by an American team. Other than that, not much is known about the plot so far other than every character from the original Pitch Perfect seems to be returning at this point (anyone else excited for more classic Fat Amy moments?) reported that Pentatonix will play a Canadian a capella group (unfortunately, not themselves). The site also added that Pentatonix won a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental or A capella arrangement, awarded for their song “Daft Punk.” Pitch Perfect 2 comes out in theaters this Friday, so take that time to brush up on the first movie (or see it for the first time, if that’s the case).
