Fox is expanding Empire with more episodes and more celebrities in the show’s second season, according to Entertainment Weekly. Chairman and CEO Gary Newman confirmed he’s increasing Empire‘s episodes in the second season to 18, compared to the 12 episodes that aired during Empire‘s debut season.
Because Empire returns in the fall instead of in mid-season, Fox plans to divide the 18 episodes. That simply means that since Fox is expanding Empire, there will be nine episodes with a break in between. The first half of the season will air in Fall 2015, with the second part premiering in Spring 2016. The stories in Season 2 have been advertised to “blow away the audience.”
Empire, created by Lee Daniels and Danny Strong, is an American drama television series, which debuted on Fox on January 7, 2015. It centers around a hip-hop music and entertainment company, Empire Entertainment, and the drama among the members of the founders’ family as they fight for control of the company. There is a lot of family drama because there is a mixture of family and business. There are many other relationship themes in the series that non-musical families can also relate to.
Many of the show’s regulars, like stars Taraji P. Henson, Terrence Howard, and Naomi Campbell are slated to return. New artists joining the Empire soundtrack include Ne-Yo and Timbaland, both of whom will contribute original songs to Season 2.
Fox’s hottest hip-hop drama has signed up some huge names to guest star in Season 2. Variety reports the network announced Chris Rock, Alicia Keys, and Lenny Kravitz would be appearing in guest roles in the upcoming season. Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, and Gladys Knight made appearances during Season 1.
Empire broke ratings records to become one of the biggest television hits last season. Each week more and more viewers became fans. About 17 million viewers tuned in to watch Season 1 finale that brought in huge ratings for Fox.
“Because Season 1 was so successful, Fox decide to give devoted fans more episodes to watch.”
