Will ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Really Kill Off Elena Gilbert?

With the way The Vampire Diaries ended last week, it looks like Elena Gilbert will die. Fans were treated to Jo and Alaric’s wedding being gate-crashed by Kai, who stabbed Elena and knocked her unconscious. Many will remember that it was because of a brain injury that Elena needed vampire blood during the season four finale, and that led to her becoming a vampire.

The trailer for the season finale of The Vampire Diaries certainly looks like a tribute to the character, according to the Master Herald. It shows how Elena met the Salvatore brothers, with emotional moments between herself, her friends and her brother. It then ends with Damon holding Elena’s unconscious/dead body, while Stefan and Caroline look down in shock.

Julie Plec, executive producer for the show, told The Hollywood Reporter not to take the trailer at “face value.” There is “a lot more going on.” The promotional trailers are “very powerful,” but not necessarily fully accurate. The trailer makers have a habit of taking the best clips and putting them together in strange orders to make an episode look like it is going to be something it is not. The Vampire Diaries is not the only show guilty of that, with shows like Revenge and Supernatural falling into a similar trap to tease and entice viewers.

“There’s a lot more going on in the episode than if you just take those trailers at face value.”

Fans know that Elena Gilbert is definitely being written out in some way. Nina Dobrev, who plays the character, confirmed that she was leaving last month. It was a decision she had made last year, because she always viewed Elena’s story as a six-year one. Now she wants to remain consistent. Michael Trevino, who plays Tyler Lockwood, is also leaving and Plec said that his character will not be killed off. Tyler has left a few times in the past, making it possible for him to come back as and when necessary.

It is possible that Plec will have Elena leave Mystic Falls. Her brother Jeremy (played by Steven R. McQueen) left this season to fight vampires, although everyone else thinks he is at school. Elena may find out and decide to go fight vampires with her brother, rather than stay in a town that is full of death.

Fans are gearing for an emotional episode. Even if Elena does not die, it will be a final farewell to the character. It will be interesting to see how Plec and her team of writers deal with it in The Vampire Diaries season six finale.
