The $126 million jackpot isn’t the biggest in Mega Millions history. According to ABC News, the biggest jackpot in the popular lottery game was $656 million Mega Millions — the prize was split between three people who hailed from Kansas, Illinois, and Maryland.
If a winning ticket is sold for Friday night’s drawing, the winner will have a choice of a one-time lump sum payment, or an annuity. According to MegaMillions.com, the annuity is paid out over 30 years, with the first payment issued to the winner shortly after the winning ticket is presented and validated. The remaining 29 payments are paid out once a year, and each payment is five percent bigger than the previous one to account for cost of living increases.
Mega Millions tickets are sold at lottery retailers in 44 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Tickets cost $1 each, with an additional $1 charged for the Megaplier option. Odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in almost 259 million, but the return on the $1 investment would be fantastic if you match all six numbers on the ticket.
According to MLive, there hasn’t been a Mega Millions winner since March 24. The ticket was sold in New York City, with a group of 16 co-workers from a Manhattan biopharmaceutical company sharing the $58 million jackpot. After the grand prize was split 16 ways, the lucky winners took home approximately $1.65 million (before taxes) each.
In addition to the $126 million jackpot that is up for grabs tonight, there are a number of non-jackpot prizes available that range from $1 for matching just the Mega Ball, to $1 million for matching five numbers, but not the Mega Ball.
