Georgia Sheriff Shot Friend, Charged With Misdemeanor, And Back At Work

Sheriff Victor Hill shot a real estate agent and put the woman in critical condition. The Clayton County, Georgia, sheriff said the shooting was accidental. Spontaneous statements made by the victim immediately after the shooting played a significant role in only a misdemeanor charge being filed against the sheriff. The victim has been undergoing multiple surgeries since the shooting and has not spoken again since.

Victor Hill, 50, was arrested and charged with “reckless conduct” — a misdemeanor. The Clayton County sheriff returned to his post after being released from jail. Gwenevere McCord, 43, was inside a model home when she was shot in the abdomen by her friend, Sheriff Hill.

The Georgia sheriff has not yet issued a statement about the shooting of the real estate agent to police investigators. Victor Hill declined the chance to comment when asked why he was in the model home with Gwenevere McCord or what precipitated the shooting.

“Sheriff Victor Hill was afforded the opportunity to provide a statement about the incident but he declined to comment,” Georgia police Corporal Deon Washington said.

“By consciously disregarding a substantial and unjustifiable risk, to wit: Practicing police tactics while in a model home open to the public with a loaded firearm, which would cause the harm of said person,” the Sheriff Hill arrest warrant states.

Sheriff Victor Hill turned himself into officers at the Gwinnett County Jail after shooting his friend. Hill was released less than an hour later on $3,000 bond. The Georgia sheriff was permitted to leave the scene of the shooting once he had surrendered his clothing and guns to the responding law enforcement officers.

On Thursday, Sheriff Victor Hill released a short statement to the public offering a little insight about shooting his friend.

“As reported, on May 3, 2015, I was involved in a tragic and heartbreaking accident. Gwenevere McCord, who is very dear to me, was critically injured in this accident. Please understand that for the past 48 hours, I have been entirely focused on Gwenevere and her family. I will continue to pray unceasingly for her recovery. I ask you all to please pray for Gwenevere and her family throughout this most difficult time.”

Victor Hill has served as the sheriff of Clayton County, Georgia, since 2005. In 2013, Hill was reportedly acquitted of racketeering charges. The allegations stemmed from the sheriff’s use of a county credit card.

On his very first day in office, Sheriff Victor Hill fired all 27 deputies. The deputies eventually sued for wrongful termination, got their jobs back, and sued Clayton County for $7 million.
