Drooling Over Tesla’s Electric Cars? Stop Slobbering: Tesla Motors to Sell Electric Cars Online [Video]

If you’ve been drooling over Tesla’s luxury brand of electric cars, here’s your chance to snag one at a discount. Tesla Motors now sells their automobiles online – and apparently cheaper than you can buy from any independent seller. The company quietly launched their Tesla Motors Certified Pre-Owned site last week, and you can be the proud owner of a Tesla for the same cost as a Dodge Charger SRT.

Previously, buyers had to scrounge for an independent seller to grab a Model S at a discount – and those vehicles never came with warranties. Starting at $59,000, you can purchase a previously-owned Model S, according to Engadget and drift to your heart’s content.

Tesla’s used electric cars come with a four-year, 50,000 mile limited warranty – fairly limited considering Tesla’s new electric cars are guaranteed for an infinite amount of miles and an eight-year battery and drive warranty, but still not a bad catch. Yet considering Tesla has only been manufacturing their cars for a handful of years, even the oldest model on the pre-owned site isn’t that old.

According to The Wallstreet Journal, a Tesla Motors spokeswoman stated the electric cars won’t be kept at a retail store, but at a Tesla location in different cities around the United States. Currently, Tesla’s site allows you to sort through the electric cars based on color, location, and model. All of the cars have low mileage, with one example exhibiting a very low 2,177 miles.

You can search for a used Model S in nine American cities and two states: Atlanta, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver, Cleveland, Seattle, Washington DC, Florida and Hawaii. The first slew of cars available are from owners trading in their old Model S electric cars for the newer, all wheel drive version Tesla launched last year, according to The Wall Street Journal, and are cheaper than similar cars for sale in AutoTrader.com or other independent sellers.

Tesla’s plan to resell certified, pre-owned electric cars is a smart one – used vehicles typically have a higher profit margin while increasing the overall visibility and desirability of the brand. Luxury car makers like BMW and Mercedes offer similar well-padded warranties, and have done well with their pre-owned programs. And there will be plenty of used Model S electric cars available, since Tesla owners typically trade their vehicles in for a newer model regularly.

Tesla Motors made headlines recently when their social media outlets were hacked, as reported by the Inquisitr.

As for who would want a Tesla – well, Cameron Diaz for one. The movie star famously loves her black Model S, while Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck share Cameron’s love of the electric vehicles, shuttling their daughter to and from school in a similar Model S. Ben & Jerry’s loves Tesla electric cars too.

Which leads us to wonder – might any of the used electric cars be theirs?
