Will The Royal Baby Be Named After Princess Diana?

Last Saturday, another member of the royal family was welcomed into this world, and with her arrival comes one of the biggest dilemma that Prince William and Princess Kate are about to face: what to name the new princess.

Presently, the newest member of the monarchy goes by the name Princess Cambridge but she won’t be using that name for long. Her royal parents are currently poring over name choices, and as they contemplate on this important matter, the media are also making their bets.

According to recent polls, the names Alice and Charlotte are at the top of the list. However, Elizabeth is also a strong contender. It placed third on the rankings and holds more sentimental value than Alice and Charlotte. Elizabeth is the name of the princess’ great grandmother who, by September, will be England’s longest-reigning monarch. It is also Princess Kate’s middle name and that of her mother Carole Middleton who has played an important role in the marriage of her daughter and Prince William.

While Elizabeth proves to be a good choice for the new princess, many are insisting that she should be named after Prince William’s mother, the late Princess Diana.

UK online source The Telegraph stands by this as they wrote, “But whatever the bookies say, the baby must be called Diana. Whether it is her Christian or middle name, she will, without any doubt, be Diana.”

Despite this and similar opinions, a close family friend of the monarchy pointed out that Prince William and Princess Kate are not going to use either of Diana’s names. Prince William’s late mother had two names, Diana and Frances.

The friend said, “I think they’re more traditional than that. I would think they would go with a more royal name. I love the idea of Alice.” He also said that he would be surprised if they decide to use Princess Diana’s name as he considers that choice as quite political.

Nonetheless, the memory of Princess Diana has been commemorated since the birth of her granddaughter. She might not be around physically but her presence is undoubtedly evident as her close friend Rosa Monckton revealed how the late princess would have loved to have a granddaughter.

On Twitter, Monckton wrote, “How Diana would have loved a grand daughter.”

This is not the first time that she wrote about Princess Diana’s thoughts on being a grandmother. Last year, she also wrote how sad she felt when she saw Princess Kate shopping for baby clothes with Carole. She related that the Princess Diana would have loved to be part of that ritual.
