Mike D’Antoni Resigns As Knicks Coach

Mike D’Antoni announced on Wednesday that he has resigned from his position as the coach for the New York Knicks, a move that comes amid a relatively disappointing season.

In D’Antoni’s place, Mike Woodson served as the interim head coach in Wednesday’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers–which, as it happens, the Knicks handily routed, with a final score of 121-79.

Jim Dolan, owner of the Knicks, said in a news conference that he had an “honest conversation” with D’Antoni prior to the announcement of his departure.

“He clearly felt it was best for the organization if he were not to continue as coach of the team. He did offer to stay,” Dolan said during a news conference. “After a long discussion, we did agree it was best for the organization to have new voice moving forward.”

Carmelo Anthony, whose performance has been struggling since he returned to the Knicks after a groin injury, said he was surprised by D’Antoni’s announcement.

“Nobody saw this coming,” Anthony said after the win. “I had a brief conversation with him this morning about the direction of the team, what we need to do and where we headed. He ran shoot-arounds this morning. I went home, took a nap. (When I woke up) I had 30-something messages. That’s when I found out.”

Do you think the Knicks will be better off without Mike D’Antoni?
