Homeless Man Donates 18 Cents: Church Receives Donation, Note From Homeless Man

A homeless man donated 18 cents to a church in Charlotte, North Carolina, and left a touching note along with the spare change in a story that is going viral on the internet this week. According to People Magazine, the man left the change in an envelope and wrote a message on the outside explaining why his donation was such a small amount.

“Please don’t be mad. I don’t have much. I’m homeless. God Bless,” he wrote.

The pastor of finance at the First United Methodist Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, was quite surprised by the donation — and the note.

“We read it and it touched us. The message implies the giver thought we might be mad. We didn’t feel mad at all. It took some bravery to write that down and say ‘I’m homeless, but I still want to give,'” said Reverend Patrick Hamrick.

The homeless man who donated 18 cents may be getting some help from the community following his selfless act. After Reverend Hamrick posted a photo of the envelope on Facebook, several community members said that they wanted to locate this kind man and to pay it forward.

According to the Huffington Post, the man left one dime, one nickel, and three pennies inside the envelope. While that might not seem like much, that spare change could have made a difference in the life of a homeless person who doesn’t have any food to eat.

“You’re literally right in between two very different worlds. We are, and we see that. Sunday mornings we welcome a big crowd of people to come have breakfast with us, some of them are coming from shelters. It’s touching that one of our homeless neighbors responded by giving back We weren’t ‘mad,’ we were very touched by this,” said Reverend Hamrick, adding that this could have been all of this homeless man’s money for the day.

As previously reported by the Inquisitr, the pastor was taken aback by the homeless man’s actions, just as other people reading this story are. It is not about how much you can give, it’s about giving what you have. It seems obvious that the man who gave his spare change really gave everything he could, and that is significant.

So far, the homeless man has not been identified. Many hope that they learn who left his spare change in the donation envelope so that they may help him, and this story will go full circle.
