Nina Dobrev’s Exit Of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Stirs Rumors Of Cancellation

This probably won’t come as much of a surprise to fans of The Vampire Diaries, or to fans of Nina Dobrev, but rumors are beginning to circulate that The Vampire Diaries may see a premature death. Sources connected with The Vampire Diaries are reporting that the departure of Nina Dobrev, the primary female lead of The Vampire Diaries, combined with the marriage of Ian Somerhalder to Nikki Reed, has spelled doom for a show that has already been experiencing ratings slips.

For those that aren’t aware of the events contributing to The Vampire Diaries‘ demise, the trouble began when Nina and Ian began dating in real life. The couple tried to keep their relationship low-key on The Vampire Diaries‘ set, but news leaked out to the delight of fans. As workplace romances tend to do, the relationship between Dobrev and Somerhalder soured, creating tension on and off screen for The Vampire Diaries stars following their break-up.

Enter Nikki Reed. Although both Dobrev and Somerhalder deny the implications, events indicated Nina’s jealousy and hurt feelings were getting in the way of her role on The Vampire Diaries. It seemed inevitable that Dobrev would leave The Vampire Diaries for a fresh start elsewhere, yet her announcement still broke the hearts of millions of her fans. On the tail of Nina Dobrev’s revelation that she would be leaving The Vampire Diaries, Ian Somerhalder and Nikki Reed were wed.

This leaves The Vampire Diaries with a greater disadvantage than it would even appear at a casual glance. Nina Dobrev’s departure doesn’t just bring an end to the story of Elena Gilbert (and the Delena love story), but it also eliminates any further doppelganger storylines, which has played a major part in the series throughout The Vampire Diaries‘ six year run. No more Katherine Pierce, Amara, etc.

Additionally, Nina Dobrev’s announcement was made in relation to her contract, meaning that she had agreed to finish out the season, but would simply not re-up on the new Vampire Diaries season. This is the same decision facing all of The Vampire Diaries major players and with Nina gone and Ian shifting his focus to his new wife, there seems to be a consensus among stars and fans that The Vampire Diaries is not worth saving.

The original plan for The Vampire Diaries was to conclude the saga smoothly at the end of its seventh season, but if more stars opt to leave after this season in search of fresher opportunities, the CW network may be forced to cancel The Vampire Diaries earlier than planned.

What do you think? Should The Vampire Diaries go on and develop new stories, or should everyone accept their fate and let The Vampire Diaries die with Nina Dobrev’s departure?
