Joni Mitchell: Which Of The Conflicting Health Reports Are True?

Singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell was hospitalized on March 31 due to an unnamed illness, and still remains in the hospital today. It is unclear what Joni suffers from, and the severity of her health condition is unknown as well. Similar to the recent Bobbi Kristina Brown coma confusion, two greatly varying accounts are circulating. One has Mitchell lying unresponsive in a coma, and the other states Joni is awake and doing well.

On April 1, CNN reported that the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a call from the home of Joni Mitchell and had rushed to her the hospital. At that time, the Joni Mitchell website released the following statement.

“Joni was found unconscious in her home [Tuesday] afternoon. She regained consciousness on the ambulance ride to an L.A. area hospital. She is currently in intensive care undergoing tests and is awake and in good spirits. More updates to come as we hear them. Light a candle and sing a song, let’s all send good wishes her way.”

CNN is currently reporting that while Joni remains at the UCLA Medical Center, Leslie Morris, a long-time friend of Joni Mitchell, has filed court papers to gain the right to make medical decisions if the singer is too indisposed to make them for herself. It is important to note that Morris’ court filings do not include any type of claim on Joni Mitchell’s money.

The court paper from April 28 states that Joni is not awake and cannot make medical choices for herself.

“At this time she [Mitchell] remains unconscious and unable to make any responses, and is therefore unable to provide for any of her personal needs.”

The document is accompanied by a doctor’s capacity declaration stating that Mitchell will not be well enough to attend court proceedings for a period of four to six months. However, the Joni Mitchell official website paints a very different story.

“Contrary to rumors circulating on the Internet today, Joni is not in a coma. Joni is still in the hospital — but she comprehends, she’s alert, and she has her full senses. A full recovery is expected. The document obtained by a certain media outlet simply gives her longtime friend Leslie Morris the authority — in the absence of 24-hour doctor care — to make care decisions for Joni once she leaves the hospital.”

Which account is accurate? According to Alisse Kingsley, Mitchell’s publicist, the website holds the true story. Fans and friends are posting their thoughts and prayers to Mitchell via #WeLoveYouJoni.
