Pregnant 10-Year-Old Raped By Stepfather Denied Life-Saving Abortion

A 10-year-old girl is reportedly pregnant following a vicious sexual assault she suffered at the hands of her stepfather in Paraguay. According to the Mirror, medical examiners discovered the young girl was 21 weeks into the pregnancy when she was rushed to a local hospital after complaining about severe stomach pains.

At such a young age, the pregnancy comes with a number of life-threatening risks. The director of the hospital confirmed several risks that could potentially pose a threat where her health is concerned, reports Amnesty International. However, the victimized girl's disheartening situation only gets worse.

On April 28, her mother formally requested that she be granted the right to have an abortion. Unfortunately, she is being denied the opportunity to have the procedure -- even if her life depends on it. According to Metro, instead of being allowed to have the abortion, the young girl was transported to a center that houses young mothers. But, why? Apparently, there are a number of issues surrounding clarification where Latin American abortion laws are concerned.

It has been reported that Latin America has strict abortion policies. As a matter of fact, Latin American has five out of seven countries in the world where termination of pregnancy is reportedly banned in all cases, reports RH Reality Check.

"Latin America is home to five of the seven countries in the world in which abortion is banned in all instances, even when the life of the woman is at risk: Chile, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic, with the Vatican City and Malta outside the region. Legal abortion upon request during the first trimester is only available in Cuba (as of 1965), Mexico City (as of 2007), and Uruguay (as of 2012). In the rest of the continent, abortion is criminalized in most circumstances, with few exceptions, the most common of which are when the life or health of the woman is at risk, rape, incest and/or fetus malformations."

Based on the excerpt, Paraguay grants abortions when the pregnancy poses a threat to the mother's life. However, the young girl being sent to a center for young mothers insinuates that her abortion request has been denied. Unfortunately, there is no further information explaining why she's been denied.
