Tim McGraw Discusses Fitness, Green Smoothies, And Kale Salad

Tim McGraw has come under fire by gun-rights activists recently, but there’s a particular pair of guns some want to know more about — the country star’s bulging biceps.

The 47-year-old dad told Yahoo Health that he stopped drinking, cleaned up his diet, and started working out to be his best for his wife, Faith Hill, and their three teenage daughters.

“You look at yourself and you look at your life, and for me, I have a 17-year-old, a 16-year-old, and a 13-year-old. I want to be around, I want to see them grow into beautiful, strong women, and I want to be around to see that.”

He made his transformation the old-fashioned way with sweat and positive lifestyle changes. While he admits to enjoying his favorite cheeseburger on occasion, the family now opts mainly for turkey burgers instead.

“I’m sorry! I have to have a cheeseburger. The thing is, though, you do it occasionally, and we really enjoy turkey burgers now. That’s become a big part of our routine instead. But, every now and then …”

McGraw adds that exercise helps in more ways than just maintaining his ripped physique. He claims it gives him a mental boost, and the energy he needs to keep up with his three girls. Running is the one activity he makes sure to do daily, but also mixes things up with crossfit and weightlifting, according to the New York Daily News. In addition, he and Faith combine staying active with quality time by playing one-on-one basketball together — which he says she always wins.

“It helps me maintain all the things I have to do. It helps me be responsive, it helps my brain function, it helps so many things I have to do. It certainly helps me be active for my kids when I need to be.”

He’s not eating many fried bologna sandwiches with mayo and tomato these days. Instead, he raves about one of his favorite healthy meals.

“It’s almost anti-country singers, but one of my favorite things is a kale salad (with) all kinds of things in it: walnuts, pumpkin seeds, parmesan cheese, olive oil, lemon.”

The fit “Highway Don’t Care” singer shared his kale salad recipe, along with ones for his favorite Green Gunk Smoothie, and Faith Hill’s Carrot Salad with Dr. Oz. He is visiting the Dr. Oz Show today to discuss how he and Faith maintain a strong marriage despite a demanding tour schedule, as well as his partnership with the American Diabetic Association. While Tim McGraw isn’t a diabetic, he said he has family members and friends who are, and is happy to be part of a campaign that encourages a healthy lifestyle.
