‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’ Already Smashing Box Office Records

Avengers: Age of Ultron hit theaters in the United Kingdom this weekend, and it’s already breaking box office records. As one of the most awaited movies of the year, it’s no surprise that, over the weekend, it grossed more than $200 million, according to Comingsoon.

This box office number is reported to be the biggest opening since Skyfall emerged in 2012 with more than $77 million in sales in the first weekend, according to the Guardian.

The highly anticipated flick easily beat out the Fast and Furious 7, which has held the record in the last few weeks with an opening weekend grossing over $160 million. It’ll be fascinating to see how the new Avengers movie will fare when it hits the states this Friday.

It also left Fifty Shades of Grey‘s record trailing in the dust. It held the United Kingdom box office record for a short period of time, as well, before Furious 7 took over with $158 in the opening weekend overseas, but only $81 million in the United States.

This box office triumph doesn’t come as much of a surprise to movie enthusiasts. According to this article, posted previously on the Inquistr, Marvel fans predicted six months ago that Avengers: Age of Ultron would make billions, and with such an incredible start, there’s every possibility that it will reach that mark in the coming weeks, where its already sold out in several major theaters in Chicago.

And it’s really no surprise to those who aren’t big Marvel fans. The popularity of superhero movies has been unsurpassed since the first comic book came out, and when graphics and CGI became good enough to deliver a halfway decent superhero movie, the craze took off from there, with more and more remakes and new superhero movies to grace the big screen.

Based on the success of the last Avengers movie, which was the biggest film opening ever recorded in the United States at $207 million, fans in the United States can’t help but predict even higher numbers at the opening this weekend.

Other recent Marvel movies have also made significant waves in the box office on their opening weekend with the following numbers.

  • Iron Man 3: $175 million
  • Captain America 2: $96 million
  • Guardians of the Galaxy: $160 million
  • Thor 2: $86 million

Though these numbers are high, they don’t come close to the Avengers 2 record. Each of these films has subscribed to the traditional Marvel structure, with all of our favorite actors, and when you bring it all together in one film, it’s highly attractive to Marvel fans and even skeptics.

Furthermore, the high publicity brought on by the Avengers cast over the last few weeks has made significant progress in informing people of what to expect from the film, and according to the Chicago Tribune (spoilers alert!), Avengers: Age of Ultron won’t disappoint.
