Marvel’s Nightcrawler Revealed For ‘X-Men: Age Of Apocalypse’
Fox has revealed its newest character for Marvel’s X-Men: Age of Apocalypse, just after Avengers: Age of Ultron swept the theaters, keeping the Marvel universe at the forefront of everyone’s mind. The images show a young Nightcrawler, and reveal that Alan Cumming will not be reprising his role as the lovable blue mutant, as was previously reported. Instead, Kodi Smit-McPhee will take on the alter ego of Kurt Wagner. Smith-McPhee will bring a bit of youth to Nightcrawler, in a role that takes place years prior to X2: X-Men United. Smit-McPhee will join a large cast of mutants in the upcoming film, bringing new life to the X-Men franchise of movies.
Nightcrawler has the mutant ability of teleportation, which is usually accompanied by a “BAMF” sound and the smell of sulfur, adding to his demonic aura. However, Nightcrawler is considered one of the nicest mutants on the planet, a trained German acrobat, and a devout Catholic. IGN reported that Kodi Smit-McGhee will appear alongside other mutants played by a plethora of fantastic actors such as Olivia Munn, Ben Hardy, Oscar Issac, Sophie Turner, Rose Byrne, Nicolas Hout, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and James McAvoy. The main antagonist, Apocalypse, will be played by Oscar Isaac.
Smit-McPhee’s Nightcrawler is a different take on the Nightcrawler that was showcased in X2. Due to his younger age, he appears to be a little more awkward than the skittish portrayal by Alan Cummings.
Vox shared images of NIghtcrawler in a crouching and standing pose, giving a good idea of what fans can expect from the mutant. Kurt Wagner, Nightcrawler’s real name, is the child of Mystique and Azazel, both of which had appearances in X-Men: The Last Stand. It is unknown whether his lineage will be investigated in the X-Men: Age of Apocalypse, or if that will be saved for a later film, if at all. It is also unsure how his character will fit into the overall plot and if it will have any connection to the Nightcrawler in X2. Elements of time travel in the prior movie may have altered or erased his discovery in X2 altogether.
With the excitement surrounding Nightcrawler’s reveal, fans are anticipating reveals of other characters in their full X-Men regalia, wondering if there will be considerable changes for old characters and how the new characters, such as Olivia Munn, will fit in with the team and how closely they will resemble their comic book personas.
