"You never want to go down 3-1 and be facing elimination in three straight games," Clippers gurad J.J. Redick told the Los Angeles Times after the Game Three disaster. "Obviously Kawhi (Leonard) was awesome and had a great game, but after that, no one had a really high-scoring game. They were just really balanced. They moved the ball. They made our guys work off the ball."
San Antonio small forward Leonard who was named NBA Defensive Player of the Year and was also the MVP of last year's NBA Finals, scored a career-high 32 points Friday.
With all seven of the other first-round playoff series headed to lopsided, early conclusions, the Clippers vs. Spurs showdown offers the only real excitement of this early stage of the 2015 NBA postseason tournament, which extends into June.
The Spurs have won five NBA titles, more than any team in NBA history except the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles (formerly Minneapolis) Lakers who have won 17 and 16 respectively — more than half of all of the NBA championships in league history — and the Chicago Bulls who won six, all in the Michael Jordan era.
The Clippers on the other hand, have made the NBA playoffs just 10 times since the franchise was founded as the Buffalo Braves in 1970, never advancing past the conference semifinals. Seven of those postseason apperarances have come since 1984, when the Clippers relocate to Los Angeles from San Diego.
But in the 2014-2015 season, the two teams were evenly matched, with Los Angeles winning 56 games to the Spurs' 55, both finishing second in their respective divisions — and each team wining two of their four regular season matchups.
