Mother Of Two Shot, Father Hopes She Lives So He Isn’t ‘Stuck’ With Their Kids, Sparks Outrage [Video]

One father has ruffled lots of feathers this week due to a seemingly insensitive comment he made during an interview with a local news station. Now, footage of that interview has gone viral. On Apr. 20, Lanay Davis and two others were shot in the Grand Park area of Jacksonville, FL. The shocking incident has left the 24-year-old mother of two in critical condition.

According to News 4 Jax, the Jacksonville Police Department has stated that no arrests have been made, and they are asking anyone with information on a possible suspect to come forward. The news brief was just like any other until the father of Davis’ two children, David Stephens, decided to speak out about the incident.

The news brief began with a phone interview where Davis’ recount of the incident. “Whoever it was, they just came up and went to shooting. Everybody scattered,” the victim said. “I thought I was gonna die,” Davis said. “I was really scared for my life.”

However, the interview took an awkward turn when David Stephens chimed in. He said something else that has many viewers raising their eyebrows and scratching their heads. Stephens stated that the incident was disheartening because he’s temporarily “stuck” with his own kids, reports The Grio.

“It’s shocking news to find that your children’s mom got shot and you got to be stuck with your kids and hoping that she lives,” Stephens said.

Needless to say, many viewers were quite appalled by the insensitive comment. Now, Davis is at the center of controversy and several media outlets. The viral clip has also sparked a debate. There have also been an overwhelming number of Facebook users who have had no reservations about slamming Stephens for his lack of desire to step in and take care of his children. However, there were others who supported Stephens by blaming the media for twisting his words. Viewers in support of Stephens argued that his statement was simply worded incorrectly.

“How dare you get shot…. you got these kids to take care of… I am not trying to be stuck with my own kids,” one viewer said in an effort to interpret Stephens’ statement.

“His wording did not reflect what he meant. That’s just the way he talks. He was trying to say he was left with the burden of explaining to his kids what happened to their mother and also trying to reassure them she will be alright. People and the media are always trying to make something out of nothing. All you’d have to do is look at his demeanor while he was talking and you would know he didn’t mean that to come out that way,” one viewer said.

“If most men were honest they would say the same thing. Men are not caretakers. Most men aren’t suppose to take care of kids. He’s being truthful. Men don’t make great parents but women don’t want to hear that…”

“This man is an embarrassment to humanity. Stuck with your own kids? Sounds like he want her to live so that he won’t have to be stuck with his own kids. Where’s the firing squad when needed?”
