Kimberly Pappas: Michigan Woman Sealed Newborn Child In Plastic Bag After Giving Birth In Office

Kimberly Pappas, a woman from Wyandotte, Michigan has been charged with the murder of her own baby after it was established that she had sealed the newborn child inside a plastic bag soon after she gave birth. According to the Toronto Sun, Kimberly gave birth to a baby boy in the bathroom of her workplace located in Redford, Michigan on March 31.

A report by the Detroit Free Press adds that after giving birth to the newborn, she cut the umbilical cord herself using cuticle scissors, put the baby in a plastic bag, sealed it, and hid it inside a desk drawer at the office of Ceva Logistics. The shocking incident came to light after other employees in the office noticed blood inside the bathroom and called the Redford Fire Department. Upon their arrival, they found the baby sealed inside the plastic back inside a desk after Kimberly told them she had given birth and that the baby was inside a desk.

According to Detective Sgt. Kevin Crittenden of the Redford police department, the baby was inside the plastic bag for a period of 15 minutes to at least half an hour before the bag was found by firefighters. When asked by responding firefighters, Kimberly told them she had suffered a miscarriage. The baby boy was dead by the time the firefighters found the bag. They could not rescue the child even after several resuscitation attempts.

Later, an autopsy revealed the cause of death to be homicide by suffocation, Sgt. Crittenden confirmed.

Kimberly Pappas was subsequently arrested and charged with felony murder, premeditated murder, and first-degree child abuse. At her appearance at a court on Friday by video arraignment, she was not allowed a bond by the 17th Judicial District Judge Karen Khalil.

In her defense, attorney Ray Cassar pleaded that Pappas has been suffering from mental health issues and has been in therapy for the same condition. He argued that had it been premeditated murder, she would not have committed the crime at her workplace. Appealing to grant a bond for Kimberly, he argued that since Kimberly was already undergoing therapy, it was essential that she be surrounded by people who love her and not be inside the Wayne County Jail where she would be sent to.

It is unclear who the father of the newborn child Kimberly Pappas gave birth to is.

Following her arrest, Kimberly has been co-operating with the investigators. Later, investigators came to know that Pappas wasn’t received any pre-natal care even though she was aware she was pregnant.

Meanwhile, Sgt. Crittenden has termed the incident a tragedy.

“It’s a tragedy,” he said. “I don’t know how to put it any other way. Unfortunately, it’s a tragedy for everybody involved: The baby, the victim, the baby’s family and the rescue people that are in the midst of all this.”

The unfortunate story of Kimberly Pappas has come to light just a few days after we had reported about the sentencing of an Utah mom who killed six of her babies right after their birth.

Kimberly Pappas could be sentenced to life if she is convicted in this case.
