Is that a long-dead samurai warrior — or at least the boots of a long-dead samurai warrior — appearing in an otherwise innocent photo of a little girl taken by the seaside by the girl’s dad? The mysterious, or at least possibly mysterious image was posted to the popular internet forum Reddit about eight months ago, but has started to go viral this week, sparking curiosity among ghost hunters and anyone intrigued by the paranormal.
The location where the photos were taken is said to be near a hidden samurai burial ground.
“My friend took this pic of his kid in Zushi, Kanagawa prefecture, Japan. He’s a bit too disturbed by it all to post himself, so I am doing it for him because I’m fascinated by it and want feedback,” wrote a Reddit user identifying himself by the online handle Obiaruf. “I’ve blurred the girl’s face out, of course. Nobody was around when the photo was taken (there were some people off to the side — one guy can be seen crouching down near the water). And certainly nobody was behind her.”
But if nobody was behind the little girl — as is evident from the photo shown at the top of this page — what are the black, leg-like objects that seem to be positioned directly behind the girl’s legs in this photo — the only one in the sequence of five taken at the same spot and time that the odd “legs” appear.
“He took about five photos of her at this spot over a period of about two minutes (he wanted a nice pic and she kept mugging for the camera and being silly, so he took several photos),” explained Obiaruf. “I’ve known this guy for years and trust him. It has definitely not been P-shopped, but I’m also not saying this is anything —I just want feedback.”
Here is a zoomed-in look at the “legs.”
“It could easily be a man standing behind her, but because of the perspective, it looks like he should be closer and therefore larger. As the foreground recedes there is little to differentiate depth,” responded one fellow Reddit poster.
Another poster recognized the footwear seen on the mysterious legs not as samurai boots but as something equally bizarre.
“This is amazing. My grandfather was in the pacific theater (Okinawa Japan) in WWII and I recognize what the man in the background is wearing. Its a US Navy Uniform from WWII,” the responding poster claimed.
Here is one more photo, appearing to show an empty background, with no one around.
