Mass Effect 3 Ships 3.5 Million Units in Its First Week

Mass Effect 3, BioWare’s latest installment in their wildly popular space opera franchise, has shipped 3.5 million units in its first week of release, EA announced today.

It’s an impressive number, no doubt, but it should be noted that EA is claiming 3.5 million shipped units, not sold. We don’t know how many copies of Mass Effect 3 were sold during that period, but EA CEO John Riccitiello went on to reveal that at least 890,000 of those 3.5 million shipped copies were sold within the first 24 hours.

“We have been truly humbled by the amazing response from fans and critics for Mass Effect 3,” said Dr. Ray Muzyka, Co-Founder of BioWare and General Manager of EA’s BioWare Label.

“The game is a gripping, engaging experience where the decisions and choices you make will truly stay with you for the months and years ahead. We are all incredibly proud of Casey Hudson and the teams in Edmonton and Montreal for delivering the best game BioWare has ever made.”

Mass Effect 3‘s controversial day-one DLC, ‘From Ashes’, was also a big success, with EA reporting that 40 percent of the people who bought Mass Effect 3 at GameStop also purchased a download code for additional content.
