If you like to celebrate 4/20 each year, this year President Barack Obama will be joining you in spirit — sort of.
The headlines have started trembling in the week leading up to April 20 (better known as 4/20) because there is a broadcast on CNN where President Obama is alleged to support medical marijuana reform.
Of course, Americans have been behind 4/20 reform for awhile. In 2013, CBS News reported that “a majority of Americans now support” medical marijuana, and even non-medical uses of the plant. On April 19, NBC News did their own 4/20 survey for NerdScreen and found that most Americans still think it should be legal for medical and recreational uses.
The television show where President Obama makes his 4/20 announcement airs on CNN on April 19 and is part of their Weed 3 documentary series.
In the past, the host of Weed 3, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, has said America needs a “medical marijuana revolution.” CNN quotes Dr. Gupta on April 17 saying the following. [Tissue warning].
“I had my own turn around a couple of years ago, and at the time it was a lonely place to hold a supportive position on medical marijuana… Just two years later, in ‘Weed 3,’ we are eyewitnesses to a revolution in full swing… This time around, you will hear from the heads of government agencies earnestly sharing their point of view, both Democratic and Republican senators, and even the President of the United States. This is what a revolution looks like.”
What will President Obama’s 4/20 message entail? In addition to CNN’s own articles published about the 4/20 surprise coming from President Obama, another highly cited source is the Daily Caller. They obtained an email about the 4/20 gift of Obama broadcasting medical marijuana support for the April 19 CNN airing of Weed 3. Daily Caller states the following about that email.
“Obama has previously predicted that more states will follow the lead of Washington and Colorado in legalizing recreational marijuana, and confirmed that although marijuana is still illegal on the federal level, the Department of Justice will look the other way… Gupta and Obama briefly discussed the recent bipartisan bill on the Senate floor introduced by Democratic Sen. Cory Booker, which proposes to reschedule marijuana from Schedule 1 to Schedule 2.”
As previously reported by the Inquisitr, a recent Schedule 1 marijuana case in California called U.S. v. Schweder was denied on April 15. The case, if it had won, could have been an important battle that led to 4/20 being legal nationwide via the Supreme Court.
Regardless, it looks like alternatives to winning cases like U.S. v. Schweder are possible with the support of people like President Obama. Other important cases that are moving through government that could turn 4/20 into an official holiday is the CARERS Act. Forbes states the following about the CARERS Act.
“Bipartisan legislation was introduced… proposing to change federal law such that states could regulate the medical use of marijuana without fear of prosecution. The major aim of the six-part legislation (S.683) is to reclassify marijuana under the Controlled Substances Act to Schedule II, thereby changing the plant from a federally-criminalized substance to one that has recognized medical uses… The CARERS Act also relaxes financial regulations on the marijuana trade by providing safe harbor for banks and credit unions to offer services to dispensaries, growers, and manufacturers.”
Thanks President Obama for the Happy 4/20!
