Castle is rumored to be losing a major character next year, with Nathan Fillion now guaranteed to return but Stana Katic still a big question mark.
This week, a spokesperson for ABC confirmed that Nathan Fillion has a new contract to continue on as the title character in the popular detective show. But co-lead Stana Katic will see her contract expire in just a few weeks, and so far there is no word on whether she will be renewed.
Katic may have already dropped some hints that she is ready to leave Castle. Back in November, she told TVLine that she would rather leave the show while it’s at the peak rather than stay and watch storylines get stale.
“If the character is complete, if there is nowhere else to go creatively, then I think it’s better to stop when you’re on to,” Katic said, adding, “[F]or me it’s about art over finance, and as long as we’re creating something that is compelling and that has somewhere to go, then we’re good to go. And when we find that we’re not… then it’s time for everyone to pack up and move onto the next thing.”
Later in the interview, Stana Katic appeared to be looking back on her character, Kate Beckett.
“I’m lucky that I got to play this character. I’m lucky that I got to experience this, she said. “So I’m happy with whatever happens in the end. I’m just happy that I got to be one of the cogs in the machine that created this show and was a part of its success in some small way. So that makes me happy, whatever happens.”
While Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic are the backbone of Castle, the show is already losing the person who puts it all together behind the scenes. ABC confirmed that David Amann will not return as showrunner, and TVLine is reporting that series creator Andrew W. Marlowe and executive producer Terri Edda Miller are moving out of their roles to take a bigger focus on development.
Despite the uncertainty and rumors regarding a shakeup on Castle, many observers think that both Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic will return for Season 8. Though ABC has not officially announced yet that the show is renewed, it has continued to get strong ratings with Fillion and Katic and is expected to come back for next season without any drastic changes.
