San Diego Chargers Rumors: Team Working On Trade Sending Philip Rivers To Tennessee Titans For No. 2 Draft Pick, Marcus Mariota

The San Diego Chargers are rumored to be working on a blockbuster trade that would send quarterback Philip Rivers to the Tennessee Titans in exchange for the No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft, where they would then take Marcus Mariota.

The report comes as trade talks for Mariota have heated up. There are as many as a half dozen teams reportedly interested in the Oregon quarterback, though it sounds as if the Chargers may have the best offer.

Word of the San Diego Chargers trade rumor came through Bleacher Report‘s Jason Cole, who said there may be more to the trade than just Philip Rivers.

“San Diego Chargers will ultimately make a deal with the Tennessee Titans for the number two overall pick. As part of that trade, the Chargers will send the number 17 overall pick and Philip Rivers, just as a start, for the number two pick.”

The San Diego Chargers could have some competition if they want to land Marcus Mariota. With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers seemingly locked in with Jameis Winston at No. 1 and the Titans likely sticking with Zach Mettenberger at quarterback, it creates an opportunity for another quarterback-starved team to trade into Tennessee’s place and land Mariota.

The New York Jets are reportedly serious about trying to make the trade, with third-year quarterback Geno Smith falling out of favor with the team. The Philadelphia Eagles are also serious about trying to trade into the No. 2 spot, reports indicate.

This is not the first time that the San Diego Chargers have been rumored to putting Philip Rivers on the trade block. Back in March, the Fansided blog Bolt Beat noted that the Chargers held a workout with Mariota, indicating that the team could be working on a trade.

“Mariota is not expected to be available when the Chargers make their selection in the draft. If the team wants to get him, they would have to move up the draft board to make that selection. Something doesn’t seem to make sense. Teams are limited in the number of private workouts that they can have with prospects and the Chargers are using one of there workouts on Mariota.”

If the rumors regarding the San Diego Chargers are true, the trade would represent quite a gamble by the Tennessee Titans. Philip Rivers is a free agent at the end of the season, so unless they can work out an extension, there would be no guarantee that they get much in return for Marcus Mariota beyond a hired gun for one season.
