Sarah Hyland is bravely opening up about her health battles. The Modern Family actress has overcome challenges that at one point caused doctors to warn her mother that it would be impossible for her to live a normal life, reported People.
For as long as she can remember, Hyland has battled kidney dysplasia. She even had a complex kidney transplant, required to save her life, in 2012. Now, Sarah is revealing what her mother told her about the doctors’ predictions when she was born.
“I was born with so many health issues that doctors told my mother I would never have a normal life. And she said, ‘You’re right, she won’t – but it won’t be because of her health.’ When my mother told me that story, it resonated with me.”
Sarah reflected on how her mother’s words shaped her life in a Seventeen magazine interview.
“Happiness, I’ve learned, comes from within. I am happiest when I am doing something I love. And I love Modern Family – it’s the best job I’ve had in my 20 years as an actress,” declared Hyland.
But she wants the world to understand that she also has struggled to succeed in her chosen career.
“It didn’t come easily or fast or free: It took me 14 years to land a gig like this.”
For girls her age who might feel a lack of confidence, Sarah offers advice based on her own experience.
“When you’re feeling vulnerable, it can lead to doubt and second-guessing. It will steer you away from your goals and your happiness,” she mused. “Once you have a goal, keep moving forward – even if you’re taking baby steps!”
As for Hyland’s future, she’s determined to dream big.
“If I can’t have an ordinary life, I might as well have an extraordinary one. If you set your mind to something, you’ll achieve it.”
Sarah also emphasizes how much her parents helped her with her health battles, reported the Daily Mail. The 24-year-old’s mother, Melissa Canaday, has offered her support, but it was her father, Edward Hyland, who went one step further.
Ed was the one who donated one of his kidneys to his daughter, saving her life. That’s because Sarah’s diagnosis of kidney displasia results in organ malfunction.
Now, Sarah is one of the most popular young actresses on TV, grinning as she recently got covered in green slime at the Kids Choice Awards 2015, as the Inquisitr reported.
The slime honors were the result of Modern Family‘s trophy for favorite family TV show.
