Adam Levine, Maroon 5 Crossover On ‘The Voice’

The world that separates Adam Levine from his two passion projects got a little bit smaller earlier this week. Maroon 5 joined Levine on NBC’s The Voice, where Adam and company got a chance to perform their hit song “Sugar” on national television.

According to Directly Lyrics, Adam Levine stood up from his red coach chair to join his Maroon 5 buddies on stage to perform “Sugar,” which currently sits at #2 on the Billboard chart behind Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk”.

Levine and company first introduced “Sugar” to the masses via a Nissan car commercial that aired in November of last year, ironically enough during an airing of The Voice. The comical vignette featured the Maroon 5 front man as he was driven around in the Nissan 545-horsepower car also known as the GT-R, while singing “Sugar” from the passenger seat.

But the song truly gained momentum following their highly controversial music video for the song. Adam joined his band mates in an homage to the classic 2005 comedy Wedding Crashers as the group appeared to crash several unsuspecting L.A. couples’ weddings. In an interview with Access Hollywood, Levine explained how the idea originated directly from the movie starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson as the direct inspiration.

“David Dobkin, who is an awesome director and a really dear, dear friend, decided to revisit the concept of obviously the original Wedding Crashers,” he explained. “The only difference being we actually crashed weddings this time.”

However, what started out as a genuinely appreciated stunt proved to be less than on-the-level. Many sources disputed the initial report that the band “crashed” all the weddings seen in the video, and that in fact, the band’s appearances were choreographed and staged. A rep confirmed this to Entertainment Tonight, telling the show that “the grooms knew in each case.”

Whether they disclosed this knowledge to their bride-to-be and guests was out of the band’s control. The rep also noted that other scenes, like Levine’s solo performance, “had to be shot separately from the real weddings due to time and space constraints that were given.”

Nevertheless, “Sugar” has catapulted into one of Maroon 5’s biggest hits to date. According to Headline Planet, the song has now crossed the $2 million dollar sales mark. “Sugar” is the second straight Maroon 5 single to achieve that feat after their song “Animals” crossed over into similar status earlier this year.

Overall, Maroon 5’s new album V can unequivocally be labeled a huge success. Adam Levine pumping it up on The Voice can only help push it farther.
