‘Final Fantasy Record Keeper’: What You Need To Know

Fans of the Final Fantasy series will be happy to know that the series’ makers, Square Enix, recently released Final Fantasy: Record Keeper for tablets and smartphones, gamer news site Silicon Era reported.

Silicon Era added that players will get to travel through different realms featured in the earlier games, as well as mixing and matching characters from the other Final Fantasy games. The site added that the game has already been downloaded five million times in Japan.

Heavy.com’s Elton Jones gave players some tips for navigating through the world of Record Keeper, noting that players get an experience bonus by using characters in realms related to the game each character is originally from. A similar theme goes with using gear appropriate to each character’s game, Jones added.

For whatever reason, Square Enix was quicker to put their games on the mobile marketplace than other gaming companies, namely Nintendo. There have been several incarnations of Final Fantasy for Apple devices, including a $70 bundle that includes the original game and the first six sequels. Android Authority also reported that Android is adding FF 7 and 13 to its devices via a new streaming service called Dive In.

Android Authority added that Dive In will be charging on a per-title basis but also mentioned that the service is currently only available in Japan. Final Fantasy characters have also appeared in Disney’s Kingdom Hearts game series as heroes who battle against a variety of different Disney villains.

With the immensely popular series selling more than 80 million units since its inception, it’s no wonder Square Enix wants to keep it alive as long as possible. Even though technology has improved far beyond the 8-bit systems video games used to be designed for, the game will offer a walk down memory lane both in storyline and graphical quality for hardcore gamers and 20-somethings who remember the original Game Boy. The announcement of Record Keeper comes about a month after the the Collector’s Edition Final Fantasy Heavensward Collectionwas announced.

As computers are slowly losing ground to mobile devices and applications, it makes sense for Square Enix to turn to tablets and smartphones as its next marketplace. The fact that Final Fantasy: Record Keeper is free will also probably help its download numbers, and that means Square-Enix could later go on to sell other paid apps to gamers, with whom it already has plenty of rapport as one of the bigger names in the industry.

Given that Square Enix’s other superstar, Kingdom Hearts, is also doing well on PlayStation, perhaps there’s a chance of seeing a mobile Kingdom Hearts game in the near future, either with or without it joining the handheld PS Vita platform.
