Long Island Doorman Fired For Being Too Nice To Tenants

Even though it was his job to be nice and courteous to the tenants of the building where he worked, doorman Ralph Body probably never even considered that it was possible to be too nice.

Ralph, 41, who was employed at the high-end Long Island City apartment 27 on 27th, said he “gave his life” for the tenants of the building.

As well as holding the door, Ralph did a whole lot more for tenants, checking on their pets when asked to, watering their plants, and even showing apartments to prospective new tenants.

The now-unemployed Ralph told reporters, “Everything I did, somebody asked me to do, or there was a need for it,” adding that it was upper management who wanted him fired. “They said, ‘We know you did it for the right reasons, but unfortunately.?.?. you’re too nice to the tenants.'”

He said he pleaded with his employers, saying, “I told them, ‘When the tenants ask me to do something, I’m going to say yes.’ But they said, ‘You do things for them which you shouldn’t be doing.’ And unfortunately, in this case, nice guys finish last.”

A number of the tenants at the block have signed a petition to get Ralph reinstated.

“Going above and beyond your work duties shouldn’t be punished — it should be praised,” reads the petition, “We stand with Ralph.”

The heartfelt petition continues, “Most tenants.?.?. can attest to Ralph’s kindness and eagerness to make people feel safe and welcome. In a transient city where most people are from other states and countries, 27 on 27th was a unique building that truly felt like ‘home’ from the moment you stepped through the front doors.”

The tenant who arranged the petition, who wished to remain nameless, told reporters, “Ralph made this different than other luxury buildings. I would definitely have to think twice about my [lease] renewal now.”
