Are There Any Republicans in Hollywood? List May Surprise You

Hollywood is generally known for sitting comfy on the left side of the political aisle, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t right-leaning celebrities out there. Most of them avoid political questions or just plain don’t bring it up, contrasting more vocal left-leaning celebs like Sean Penn, George Clooney, or Susan Sarandon. With the 2012 election just starting to heat up, you might be wondering which celebs swerve right and might come out to support an Obama-free 2012 this year.

Jessica Simpson – This star’s conservatism may come as no surprise, but she nevertheless supported George W. Bush in 2004.

Adam Sandler – Sandler doesn’t get a lot of notice for his humanitarian side, but the actor/comedian donated $1 million to the Boys and Girls Club in his hometown back in 2007. That same year, he donated to Rudy Giuliani’s presidential campaign (Giuliani was running as a Republican, lest we forget).

Ashton Kutcher – This actor is more a businessman than anything else anymore, so it should come as no surprise that he identifies with the right, at least fiscally.

Robert Downey Jr. – My biggest shocker in doing research for this article. Though no one knows for sure and he hasn’t made a definitive stand, he once told the New York Times, “I have a really interesting political point of view, and it’s not always something I say too loud at dinner tables here, but you can’t go from a $2,000-a-night suite at La Mirage to a penitentiary and really understand it and come out a liberal.”

50 Cent – This rapper was all about the Bush, calling him “incredible. A gangsta. I wanna meet George Bush, just shake his hand and tell him how much of me I see in him.” Though this reads to me as slightly tongue-in-cheek.

Johnny Ramone – Loved Reagan, calling him “the best president of my lifetime.”

Kelsey Grammer – Of Cheers and Frasier has been a long-time Republican, most recently endorsing Michele Bachmann.

George Clooney – Wait, what?! Okay, so he’s not a Republican, but he did defend conservatives against Bill Maher once, and though he has voiced his support of Obama, has been conspicuously absent from political goings-on of late.

A few more suspects: The Hollywood Congress of Republicans claims that Alex Trebek, Anderson Cooper, Robert Duvall, Bruce Willis, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Dick Clark, The Rock, and several others actually lean right. Click that link up there for a full list.

IQ itself has recently brought you stories of Kelly Clarkson’s vocal support of Ron Paul, and Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine’s support of Rick Santorum.
