ATF Raids Gunsmoke Guns: ‘American Guns’ Featured Store Closed Down

ATF agents raided the Gunsmoke Guns store in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, earlier this week. The gun store is a setting for the American Guns reality television show. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents raided the gun store, which was burglarized in February of 2013, but have refused to release any details regarding the cause for the armed police presence.

Gunsmoke Guns is located at 9690 West 44th Avenue in Wheat Ridge. During the 2013 robbery, still-unidentified burglars reportedly gained access through the roof and stole rifles and handguns. The ATF gun store raid on the Colorado business occurred at 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, according to Christopher Amon, of the Denver ATF field office.

Rich Wyatt, the owner of the Gunsmoke Guns store, had not yet been charged with any criminal offenses, nor has anyone else with a connection to the shop featured in American Guns. The ATF search warrant remains “under seal,” according to Amon.

In March of 2013, after the burglary, the Gunsmoke gun store was also part of a similar raid. The IRS was reportedly investigating the Colorado gun shop prior to the police action.

ATF officials have only revealed that the most recent gun store raid was undertaken in an effort to “follow up” on a warrant related to the 2013 IRS investigation.

American Guns was broadcast by the Discovery Channel and lasted only two seasons on Discovery Channel. The reality show reportedly revolved around the lives of the Wyatt family in Wheat Ridge, Colorado.

“The parents, Rich and Renee Wyatt, own the shop, while their two kids, Paige and Kurt Wyatt, work in the store and offer their talents to the business. Kurt, for instance, is a custom engraver. Along with selling guns and ammunition, the store designs and creates custom guns and offers firearms classes,” according to a Newsmax report.

Before opening Gunsmoke Guns, Rich Wyatt was a firefighter and retired from the Alma, Colorado, police department from the position as chief.

“Rich Wyatt’s real gift lies in selling,” a Discovery Channel promo for American Guns said. “He has parlayed his gift into the number one firearms training center and largest professional gunsmith facility in the state of Colorado.”
