Dave Chappelle Pelted With Banana Peel On Stage
It’s not easy being Dave Chappelle. The comedian, who was doing a set in New Mexico, was pelted with a banana peel during his comedy routine.
According to the Associated Press, a man hit Dave Chappelle in the leg with a banana peel. The man, whose name is Christian Englander, was immediately arrested after it was suspected that he was involved in the disorderly conduct.
According to Sante Fe police Lt. Andrea Dobyns, Englander said he threw the banana peel at Chappelle because he was offended by the joke the comedian made at the expense of his companion. During the routine, Dave asked the man sitting next to Englander what his name was. When the man replied “Johnny Appleseed,” Chappelle simply couldn’t help himself and started to riff on the name. Then Englander got upset and decided to show Dave Chappelle what he thought of his jokes.
That said, it’s believed that Christian Englander wasn’t of sound mind when he decided to throw the banana peel at Dave Chappelle. Officials said that he was intoxicated at the time.
This isn’t the first time that Dave Chappelle’s comedy act has snagged headlines. In 2013, Dave was reported as having a meltdown at a show in Hartford, Connecticut, during the Oddball Festival. During that particular show, Chappelle was heckled off the stage when he wouldn’t perform comedy, and instead told life stories that took on a dark tone. The audience booed the comedian and were rowdy during the entire set.
Speaking about the hecklers, Chappelle said, “I wanted to, like, pull a reverse Kramer and call ’em all crackers or something crazy like that. I know that shit’ll be on YouTube,” he said. But he decided against it, because he “remembered how much it hurt to hear Kramer say such things.”
In addition, Chappelle called the hecklers “suburban torturers” and a “room full of white people — young, white alcoholics.”
